2 O’Clock Drop: BHM Blues

It’s only February 12th,
and I can’t ignore it!
The pervasiveness…
is just too much to take.

From stepping on the backs of our children,
Denying them the ability to represent their namesake
Parents dressed in Black face for a school fundraiser, and
To a Principal telling a Black English teacher she can’t teach Black history.

I’m just tryna make Black History.
But they just wanna makes Blacks,
History.

From being asked how will I make my Black History Month workshop relevant to the Latino population.
Being told that a kindergarten teacher receives push back from her Asian parents for teaching Black History.
Schools either doing nothing for Black History Month to only talking about slavery and the Civil Rights movement.
To most of my bloggers having a difficult time with writing only from a joyful perspective of Black History with no mention of Whiteness,  White Supremacy or White oppression

I’m just tryna make Black History.
But they just wanna makes Blacks,
History.

From students asking me, why can’t we learn the good things about Black people, why do we always have to learn about the bad?–it’s depressing.
Students not knowing any Black History, and only knowing that the “White man is evil.”
Students denying African-ness because they are poor and dirty.
To me wishing I could move to Wakanda right now because at least there, in that make believe space, Blackness, Africanness is loved.

I’m just tryna make Black History.
But they just wanna makes Blacks,
History.

I woke up and broke my cardinal rule.
I went into my social media feed and read two stories

White parents in Black face in Brooklyn
She says it was an error in judgment.
She was tired and hit send.

White principal tells Black staff they can’t teach Black History in the Bronx
She says, Black teachers don’t know their content
They’re only good for classroom management.

I just felt wetness on my face
The constant confirmation of how deeply hated and resented we are
The reminder that, not even for the shortest month of the year,
could I sit cocooned, wrapped ONLY in Black love joy and glory.
For 28 whole days.
