Women’s History Month is coming to a close but we know there will always be more to celebrate and acknowledge about the amazing women and girls of the Diaspora. Today I want to recognize Mikaila Ulmer, the pre-teen entrepreneur who is already landed a multi-million dollar deal.
At the tender age of 12 she’s making some of us old folks look bad. Young Ms. Ulmer is a social entrepreneur, bee ambassador, educator and student. She’s doing all this and plans to do more because at age 4 she was encouraged by her family to enter a children’s business competition.
Inspired by her experience of two bee stings and her Great Granny Helen’s special recipe for flaxseed lemonade, Mikaila has been building a successful business called Me & the Bees. She even has a Facebook page where she posts videos and provides knowledge about bees and advocates for protecting them.
She gained noteriety when she was featured on the tv show, Shark Tank by winning a sixty thousand dollar investment for her lemonade idea. But most recently she secured an $11 million dollar deal with Whole Foods to sell her lemonade. Ulmer is also working with United National Foods to expand her brand and products. She wants to travel to South Africa to teach children about entrepreneurship.
More than being a great story about a brilliant little girl, Mikaila reminds us of two very important things about our children. First, never place limitations on their abilities and potential. Secondly, knowing the richness of their own family and culture will equip them for greatness. The Ulmer family encouragedo their baby girl and just 8 years later she is doing what takes many of us a lifetime.
In the words so beautifully sung by the late Whitney Houston, “I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way…”
Peace and love good people.
